Elemental Abundances at Early Times: the Nature of Damped Lyman-alpha Systems

چکیده
The distribution of element abundances with redshift in Damped Lyα (DLA) systems can be adequately reproduced by the same model reproducing the halo and disk components of the Milky Way Galaxy at different galactocentric distances: DLA systems are well represented by normal spiral galaxies in their early evolutionary stages.

The first detection of cobalt in a damped Lyman alpha system
The study of elemental abundances in damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) at high redshift represents one of our best opportunities to probe galaxy formation and chemical evolution at early times. By coupling measurements made in high-z DLAs with our knowledge of abundances determined locally and with nucleosynthetic models, we can start to piece together the star formation histories of these gala...
متن کاملThe first galaxies: clues from element abundances
It has recently become possible to measure directly the abundances of several chemical elements in a variety of environments at redshifts up to z ' 5. In this review I summarise the latest observations of Lyman break galaxies, damped Lyman alpha systems and the Lyman alpha forest with a view to uncovering any clues which these data may offer to the first episodes of star formation. The picture ...
متن کاملOutflows in Galaxies and Damped Lyα Systems
Although quasar absorbers, and in particular Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) have proven a valuable tool to study the early Universe, their exact nature is so far poorly constrained. It has been suggested that outflows in galaxies might account for at least part of the DLA population. Observational evidences and models in support of this hypothesis are reviewed, including recent observations ...

متن کاملConstraining the Star Formation Histories of Grb Host Galaxies from Their Observed Abundance Patterns
Long-duration Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are linked to the collapse of massive stars and their hosts are exclusively identified as active, star forming galaxies. Four long GRBs observed at high spectral resolution at redshift 1.5 ≤ z ≤ 4 allowed the determination of the elemental abundances for a set of different chemical elements. In this paper, for the first time, by means of detailed chemical e...
